HANDLING HEAVY TEST FIXTURES |
Test fixtures continue to grow in size and weight. The Second Edition discussed the resulting ergonomic and safety problems and conveyed viable solutions. With experience based on hundreds of ATE lifts in the field, and with additional ATE's and functional testers introduced, a new generation of ergonomic handling systems was required. Accordingly, a third generation of end effecters was developed, successfully tested and introduced. The basics were thoroughly covered, in the Second Edition. This third edition is an update, overlaying the improvements and their rationale. If you wish to supplement this material, copies of the Second Edition continue to be available and will be sent when requested.
The ATE series (TF) ALUM-A-LIFTs remain essentially the same. However, the Model 350TF list is increasingly specified because of the increased stiffness required to handle the heavier (over 100 lbs.. or 50 kg) fixtures with longer reaches to the interfaces.
The new (third) generation of end effecters does four things:
- Accommodates heavier fixtures, for flat interfaces and for interfaces with variable angles. End effecters for the latter are powered, since the torque required to change the angle exceeds that which can be provided by the unaided human.
- Improves user-friendliness for both manual and powered operation.
- Expands and contracts in width. Accordingly, the lift's effective footprint is a minimum, based on the width of the fixture.
- Incorporates an improved safety switch system, which senses changes in loads in the event that an obstacle is encountered in either the up or down direction.
The new "JEDI" (mobile, height adjustable, fixture service workstation) has been improved with respect to user-friendliness and additional safety features based on several months of field testing. It is used by technicians and engineers who make, service or repair fixtures and who must have access to top and bottom. The fixture, firmly trapped by ALUM-A-GRIPs®, is rotated under power to any angle. Jedi's mobility allows the work to be done anywhere. With its height adjustability, the work can be done ergonomically by the standing or seated person, at the correct visual distance from the user's eyes.
Additional accessories for these products include:
- A universal charger for both 110v60h and 220v50h, CE Marked for use in UE Countries: Also UL & CSA for use in North America.
- A motor speed controller to reduce travel rate in the down direction as the fixture approaches the interface; and, to accelerate to ambient speed when desired.
- A foot switch for JEDI to relieve the hands for working on fixtures.
Thanks to Joe Ulbin, Ed Jaworski and Dianne Anderson of Lucent Technologies for casting light and leading the way to the development of the JEDI, and for their creation of the acronym.
